Choosing the Right Size Garage Door

If you are building a new garage, you have many options when it comes to the size door or doors you install. Not only do you need to decide between single and double doors, the sizes of the doors need to be determined as well. Here are some of the options available in standard garage doors to help you choose the right size for your needs.

Standard Garage Door Sizes

If you are on budget, your best bet is to stick with a standard size garage door. These are made in large quantities and are readily available through garage door installation services.  Even with standard doors, you have many choices in sizes and types. You have the option of single, double, and even standard doors for recreational vehicles.

  • Single garage door size. For one door per vehicle, the single door is used.  The standard sizes for single garage doors are: 8×7, 9×7, 10×7, 8×8, 9×8, and 10×8. There are other options, but these are the most common. Standard garage doors are usually 7 or 8 feet high, with the width as a variable.
  • Double garage door sizes. Double garage door can accommodate two vehicles or larger trucks.  It is common for a garage to have one large double door versus two single doors. Standard sizes for double garage doors are also 7 or 8 feet in height, with varying widths: 12×7, 14×7, 16×7, 12×8, 14×8, and 16×8.
  • RV garage door sizes. A typical RV garage door will be tall, with a similar width as a double garage door. Fifth wheels, travel trailers and smaller motor homes can use RV garage doors that are 12’W x 12’H.  Class A motor homes require at least 13’ clearance, with normal size at 14’ W x 12’H.

To determine the best size door for your garage, discuss the options with your garage door installer. There are custom size options available, but they tend to cost more. Make sure to measure your larger vehicles and consider future purchases when choosing your garage door sizes.

Prepare Your Home for the Next Big Wind Storm

Whether you live in a hurricane alley or anywhere else in the country, wind can cause extensive damage to your home. Roofs can be damaged, trees can fall and if your garage door is not secure, your whole home could be in danger. Wind storms seem to be more prevalent in recent years, making it necessary to prepare your home against possible damage.

Garage Doors and Windstorms

Garage doors can be the biggest risk to your home in a wind storm. If you have an attached garage, wind can destroy your garage door and access your home. Once the garage door is compromised, your entire home is unprotected against the storm. High winds can remove your roof from the inside and cause extensive damage to every wall in your home, as well as your possessions.

The best protection against wind damage to your home is securing your garage door entrance. Wind resistant doors that can withstand 100 MPH or high winds give you the security you need in a major storm. In many areas of the country, high wind resistance for garage doors is now required in new homes. However, if you have an older home with an attached garage, these requirements may not have been met when installing your existing garage doors.

Don’t put your entire home at risk for damage due to poor quality garage doors. Call your local garage door service company to inquire about high wind resistant garage doors. This is a small investment that can protect your home and family during a major wind storm. You never know when the next big storm will hit your region, so don’t delay.

Give Your Garage a Facelift

When it comes to home improvements, often the garage is the last place homeowners spend money. After all, they live in the house, not the garage. However, when it comes to making a home more attractive from a visitor’s point of view, the garage is often the first thing they see. A new garage door can go a long way in sprucing up the exterior of your garage, while offering many other benefits as well. Here are a few excellent reasons to consider giving your garage a facelift with a new garage door.

  • Improved curb appeal. What your home looks like from the curb is important; it actually can improve the value of your home. A new, stylish garage door can up your home’s curb appeal and increase its value.
  • Energy efficiency. If you have an attached garage, investing in a new insulated garage door can help improve your energy efficiency and lower monthly utility costs. Plus, insulated doors can help reduce noise traveling in or out of the house.
  • Safety. If you have an old garage door that is starting to wear out, consider replacing it for safety concerns. Old hardware and warped fittings can lead to garage door failure and cause injuries. Also, worn doors are more likely to fail during severe wind storms, putting your home at risk for damage.

If your garage door is over a decade old or is in need of repair, consider replacing versus repairing or painting. Upgrading to a higher quality garage door that is insulated and stylish is a wise investment into your home that will look great while adding value to your property.

Is it Time to Replace Your Garage Door?

Buying a new garage door is probably not the first item on your wish list. However, considering your garage door is most likely the largest entrance to your home, it is worth the investment. Once they begin to wear, an old garage door can detract from the beauty of your home, as well as become a safety and security problem. Here are a few signs that it is time to replace your garage door in 2015:

  • Operation issues. If you notice that your old garage door hesitates or makes excessive noise as it’s opening or closing, it may be time to replace your door and hardware. Over the years, the hardware and door can become dented, weak and rusted, making it difficult for the door to function. This puts extra stress on your opening system, reducing the life-span.
  • Energy costs. For homes with attached garages, a poorly insulated garage door can affect the energy costs for the whole home. Worn weather stripping and inferior insulation in the door can let in outside air, costing you plenty in energy bills.
  • Curb appeal. Your garage door is one of the first things people see when they come to your home. If the door is dented, has peeling paint or cracks, it can become an eyesore that detracts from the curb appeal of your home. A new garage door can make a big difference in the overall appearance of your home.

If your garage door is 15-20 years old, there is a good chance that it’s time to consider replacing it with a newer model. Talk to your local garage door service company about the many beautiful and efficient garage door models that are available.

Add A Touch Of Class To Your Garage

A great way to give your garage and home a new look is the addition of a carriage-style garage door. While a functional device, garage doors can also be an aesthetic enhancement to your home. With new technology, you can have a classically beautiful, carriage-style garage door with all the modern features to which you have become accustomed. This can increase the curb appeal of your home and add a touch of class to your garage.

Old Carriage-Style, New Features

Some of the most beautiful new garage doors are not the basic overhead variety that we think of today. While an average roll-up overhead garage door is functional, it is not necessarily as aesthetically pleasing as the carriage-style garage doors which were common in the early 1900’s. However, with new technology, you can have the look of these classic doors with the new features of modern design.

Newly designed carriage-style garage doors may look like a traditional carriage door with two-swinging doors; however, they can roll-up like modern doors. This gives the style and class of the classic design with all of the conveniences of modern technology. These can be steel or wood with an overlay that has the carriage-style design, and can be matched with a garage door opener just like any modern door.

When you are looking for a new way to transform your home and garage, giving it a classy and traditional look, carriage-style garage doors might be just the perfect solution. These doors come in a wide variety of colors and styles, with one that will surely compliment your home. The combination of classic design and modern features can make the perfect addition to any garage.

Protect Your Investment With a New Garage Door

For most Americans, buying a house will likely be the most important asset you own and the biggest investment you make. Regular maintenance and upkeep is the best way to help protect your investment against devaluation and the constant threat of home deterioration, which naturally occurs during years of wear and tear on the average house.

One major component of home maintenance is assuring your attached garage is safe and secure with a modern and state-of-the-art electric garage door. Why compromise the safety of your home, the safety of your vehicles and the safety of your family with any garage door but the best? Why bother with a garage door that isn’t updated, modern and at the same quality level as the rest of your home in order to maintain it’s value?

Scheduling an appointment with your local garage door professional is the best way to ensure the garage door you have is functioning properly, safely and is securing your garage and home from outside threats. A licensed technician can assess the current state of your electrical mechanisms, remote controls and keypad, the structure of your door, along with any windows it may have.

When you have a safe and secure garage door, you can truly rest assured that no home invaders will enter through your garage due to negligence on your part. You can also enter and exit your garage by vehicle without risking damage to the automobile by a falling or malfunctioning garage door. Your home and vehicles will be more likely to maintain their value because of your decision to have your garage door professionally updated, maintained and if needed, replaced all together.

Garage Ventilation for Safety

With all the emphasis by garage door makers and even the Environmental Protection Agency on R ratings and insulation, the tendency might be for a homeowner to want to heavily insulate not just the garage door, but the entire garage, especially if the garage is being used for purposes other than storing an automobile, such as a workshop.

But while insulating can save you a few dollars on your energy bills, over-insulating or insulating your garage without proper ventilation, however, is a disaster waiting to happen. Just read your local newspaper. There are numerous stories every year of explosions caused by storing combustible materials or running generators in the garage without proper ventilation.  In many cases, the damage to property and the injuries could have been avoided had the property owner taken a few simple precautions.

1. Don’t treat your garage like a room. Garages are meant for storing automobiles. Many people have gotten into trouble by using half their garage for car storage and half for a workshop.

2. Don’t store combustible materials in your garage and if you ever do work with the chemicals in the garage, do so with the garage door and all doors and windows fully open. Fires have been known to ignite even with garage doors partially open. Also, unless you absolutely need to store hazardous chemicals for use, consider getting rid of them safely through your local authorities. Why keep something around if it’s a danger to your family and property?

3. Don’t over insulate. Sure, adding an insulated garage door may improve energy efficiency, but does the entire garage need insulation? Consult an expert about this because, depending on your home’s structure and design, you may not need an abundance of insulation in order to benefit from energy savings.

4. If you do add insulation, make sure that you add ventilation at the same time.  This is most important of all. There are many ways you can add ventilation, including adding vents to the garage door. Talk to a garage door specialist about your options.

Garage Door Repair or Replace

If you have a broken overhead door and are in need of a garage door repair you might be faced with the decision of whether to repair your existing garage door or replace it.

Here are a few suggestions for your consideration. What kind of condition is your existing garage door in and how old is it. If it’s an older wooden overhead door you’d want to examine the entire garage door before making a decision. If you have a wooden garage door and the door sections are in good condition and aesthetically the garage door still looks good then I would opt to repair your garage door. If the garage door panels or sections are rotting, sagging and just plain falling apart I would balance the cost of a replacement garage door with the costs of repairing your existing overhead door.

For example if you have broken garage door springs and you’ve already been considering a replacement garage door now would be the time if the budget allows to install a new garage door. When your garage door is replaced all the components that go with the door such as garage door springs, hinges, tracks, garage door rollers and sections are all replaced. So if you have your garage door springs replaced today and a replacement garage door installed six months later the garage door springs will be replaced again.

One of the things I often see are steel garage doors with a broken garage door spring or worse yet both springs broken and since the customer was unaware and continued using the garage door with a broken spring the overhead door is now damaged as well. When this happens it’s usually financially advantageous to install a new replacement garage door rather than repair the existing garage door.

A general rule of thumb is that if the garage door repair is going to be 50% or more of the cost of a new garage door, replace the garage door. Contact your local garage door company for more assistance.

Steel Replacement Garage Doors vs. Wood Garage Doors

For years wood garage doors ruled the new home market as well as the replacement garage door market. About 27 years ago manufacturers started offering decorative raised panel steel garage doors in limited design and initially most garage doors were only primed and required finish painting. Well the times have changed and wood overhead doors are almost completely obsolete with the exception of custom wood carriage garage doors.

First I’ll speak of some of the benefits of wood garage doors. First and foremost they’ll take a beating without falling apart or becoming unsightly. Wood overhead garage doors can also be cut to fit your garage floor to help ensure a good seal along the floor. If your concrete garage floor is extremely out of level or broken and settled a steel door won’t seal the floor. In a rental home situation where tenant abuse of property regularly occurs, a wood garage door will last much longer with minimum repairs and maintenance other than painting.

Steel replacement garage doors come from the factory pre-painted in a handful of colors and numerous designs. They have the options of decorative windows, insulation, various sizes, can be custom designed and generally weigh less than a wood overhead garage door. Steel replacement garage doors don’t sag like wood garage doors and if the garage floor is level they make an excellent seal against the floor. Steel replacement garage doors won’t rot and since they’re pre-painted they require virtually no aesthetic maintenance only routine mechanical maintenance. Even if you choose to paint your steel replacement garage door, as long as you prepare the surface properly and use good quality paint on your overhead door the finish will last for many years to come.

If you need assistance with a new replacement garage door for your home or rental property a professional garage door company can help. If your existing garage door needs a wood replacement section or you simply need your garage door repaired.

Garage Door Replacement-Insulated vs. Non-Insulated

For many folks 2012 will be the year that you’ll need a replacement garage door installed on your existing home. One of the big decisions to make will be whether or not to have your garage door replaced with an insulated or non-insulated overhead door.

Now here are a few things to consider when making your decision to replace your garage door. Is your garage attached to your home and do you use your overhead door as a main point of entry to your garage and your home. If your garage is attached to your home how many walls are shared with the interior of your home and do you have living space above your garage door. Do you have small children and or basketball goals etc. near your overhead door?

Non-insulated garage doors are typically a hollow or pan type garage door that the back is open and the gauge of the metal ranges from 24-27 with 24 being the thicker metal. A replacement garage door that isn’t insulated tends to be very noisy almost tin can sounding when it opens and closes. Now the consideration here is do you have a bedroom or other room above or near your garage door that quiet is important. If you do then an insulated overhead door may be a better choice for you.

One important fact is that a non-insulated replacement garage door is not nearly as strong as a wood overhead door and if you have small children or your garage door area is a playground non-insulated replacement garage doors dent very easily and may not be the best choice for you.

Insulated steel sandwich type replacement garage doors are the strongest of all overhead doors and because the insulation is sandwiched between two sheets of steel they are also the quietest and most durable.

Consider your circumstances before your purchase a new replacement garage door and know that there are many reasons to install an insulated garage door.
