Is a Double Garage Door Better Than Two Single Doors?

If you are designing a new garage or considering changing the configuration of your existing garage, you may wonder about double garage doors. Two-car garages usually either have a wide double garage door, or two single doors, but which is better? It all depends on your needs and preferences, but there are a few factors that can help you decide.

Climate Control

One large door will let more air into your garage every time you use it. For some homeowners, this can be a concern. Not only does it effect the temperature in your garage, it also can impact the climate control inside of the home. Two single doors can be more efficient, with only one smaller door opening at a time.

Recreational Vehicles

If you will also have recreational vehicles like golf carts or motorcycles in the garage with cars or trucks, a large single garage door may be a better choice. It can be easier to navigate getting extra vehicles in and out without a dividing section in the middle.

Malfunctions and Repairs

For those who park all their vehicles in the garage, it is important to consider what will happen if your garage door will not open. If you only have one wide door, all vehicles are stuck until you get the door or opener repaired. With two doors, you always should have one door that is working, even if the spring breaks or damage occurs to the other door.

There is not a right or wrong answer for which option is best. Consider these factors and discuss your options with your local garage door service before you decide whether a double garage door or two single doors are best for your needs.

Is an Old Garage Door Spoiling Your Home’s Appearance?

Depending on the size of your home, your garage door could be a big part of the façade; for some homes, the garage doors take up about a third of the visible space from the street. Considering how much area these doors cover, how they look can have a dramatic impact on your home’s appearance. If you are working on improving the curb appeal of your home, one of the main areas to consider is your garage doors. An old garage door can spoil the look of your home but replacing it is a quick and easy project that can have immediate aesthetic and valuable benefits.

An old garage door may have dents and damage that detract from the overall beauty of your home. While some repairs can hide these defects, if the door is 10, 15 or more years old, it may be best to replace it for safety and security as well as aesthetics.

Choosing a New Garage Door

There are many options available in garage doors, from a plain, standard door to those with windows or special designs. You want your new garage doors to match your home’s exterior to create a cohesive style. If you have an older home (built prior to 1950) or a home with a classic design, carriage-style doors can be a beautiful option that will match your home’s accents. For modern or contemporary homes, options like metal and glass doors can create a spectacular look for the front of your home and match the design of your home.

If your old garage door is impacting the beauty of your home, or having functional issues, contact your local garage door service for replacement options. It is worth the investment to keep your home safe, secure and looking its best.

Add Value to Your Home with a New Garage Door

When it comes to home improvements, many upgrades to your home do not pay off in value. Adding a hot tub or even remodeling your bathroom can only recoup about half the cost of the project when it comes to adding value to your home. However, replacing your garage door adds value while improving the beauty of your home, making it a wise investment when it comes to home improvements.

For many homes, the garage doors cover almost a quarter or more of the front or curb view. This is a big portion of the exterior of the home, making the style and condition of your garage doors important to curb appeal. When it comes to selling your home, garage doors can have an impact on the selling price you will get for your home.

Any realtor will tell you that curb appeal is important. The first impression a home makes on potential buyers is crucial to getting the best final price. New or stylish garage doors can increase the selling price of a home by up to 4%, according to a survey conducted nationwide with realtors. On a $300,000 house, that is an increase of $12,000, which is a great return on the investment.

If you are planning on selling your home or just want to make it look its best, consider replacing old garage doors. It can be a great cost-versus-value home improvement that will pay for itself in the value it adds to your home. Talk to your local garage door service company to discuss the best styles and feature options for replacing your old. garage door.

What Color Should Your Garage Door Be?

If you’re shopping for a new garage door, you might get lost in technicalities such as springs and openers and forget completely about one very important aspect. More than anything else, the color of the garage door can have an impact on the look of your house. The right color can blend and enhance, while the wrong color can make the entire house look off balance and strange.

Most garage door manufacturers offer steel doors in basic colors of white, grey and beige. Wood doors are even more diverse, offered in natural wood stains and a wide variety of colors. Both steel and wood doors can also be painted, if desired.

Color choice is easy if you keep a few basic points in mind:

  • The garage door typically takes up a third of the front of your house and therefore becomes a focal point. If the garage door is bold or bright it will divert attention away from other aspects of the house, such as the front door, and will strongly emphasize the garage door. If the color blends it can make the house seem bigger, or help emphasize other aspects of the house, such as interesting architecture or a beautiful front entry.
  • Most homes have three colors: one for the siding, one for the trim and one for the door. In general, it is best to match the garage door with the siding.
  • For a little interest, choose a garage door that is in the same color cast as the siding, but a shade or two lighter.  If the house is brown, for example, use a cocoa color on the garage doors. If the house is brick, choose a color that brings out the cast of the brick, usually beige, blue or grey.

Just like you would test a swatch of color for inside paint, try to test the color of your garage door before you make a permanent change.  Place a plyboard sample near the garage to see how it will look, or, better yet, experiment with an online program like Color-a-Home on the Better Homes and Gardens website.
