Is it Time to Replace Your Garage Door Opener?

If you’re like most people, when your garage door opener is working, you have no plans to replace it. However, unlike a television or toaster, your garage door can actually cause safety issues and incredible inconvenience when it eventually breaks. Most garage doors openers can last 10 years or more if maintained, but if you’re starting to experience any of these signs, it may be time to consider replacing your garage door opener.

  • Loud operation. If your garage door opener has gotten louder over the last year, it may be starting to wear out or be in need service. Often, loud operation is a sign you need your system lubricated; however, it can also be the sound of your motor dying.
  • Hesitation. Does your garage door jerk or hesitate as it opens or closes? These can be signs of issues with your opener, your hardware or an unbalanced garage door.
  • Intermittent slow response. Has your garage door refused to open or close when you use your remote? The battery could be going out on your remote, or there may be problems in the signal receiver.
  • Safety features not working. Does your garage door stop if there’s an object underneath it? If not, the safety mechanism may be broken or the lasers are not aligned.

If any of these issues sound familiar, it’s time to have your garage door and opener serviced and inspected. It’s worth the investment to have these problems repaired, or your opener replaced, before they cause the system to become non-operational. There are many new options available in garage door openers with features for added convenience to homeowners; don’t put off a preemptive replacement if it’s time to replace your garage door opener.

How To Determine If Your Garage Door Opener Is Broken

You press the magic button, yet your garage door does not open. Your first feeling may be frustration, then panic. Not only is replacing your garage door opener expensive, it can also be a major inconvenience. However, before you call your local garage door repair service, it’s prudent to first try and troubleshoot the problem. Here are a few tips to help you determine whether your garage door opener needs repair or replacement:

  • Is the light showing on your remote? If you press the button on your remote, is the light coming on as normal? If not, the battery within your remote may be dead. Try opening your garage door with the indoor opener button. If this method is successful, the opener is working, but you may need a new battery for your remote.

  • Check your opener for power. Often it is the simplest solution that will get your opener working properly again. Check to make sure your opener has power, and has not short-circuited through your power box. Try flipping your circuit breaker; if that doesn’t work, unplug your opener for a moment before reconnecting. Sometimes openers need to be reset, just like a computer.

  • Try opening your garage door manually. If your garage door opener is not working from either your remote or indoor opener control, try opening your door manually. A door that will not open manually means the opener is most likely fine; unfortunately, you may have a broken spring or cable that needs to be fixed by a professional.

If after trying these methods your garage door opener is still not working, it may be time to call your garage door repair service. They can further assist you in troubleshooting your opener, and discuss repair or replacement options.

Repair of Your Garage Door or Garage Door Opener

Two common components of most homes are the garage door and garage door opener. When one of these components breaks or malfunctions, you will certainly want to have it immediately repaired. Otherwise, you won’t be able to use your garage.

RESIDENTIAL GARAGE DOOR OPENER REPAIR

The typical repair of your garage door opener will usually include the realignment of the opener’s eyes or the replacement of stripped gears or sprockets. Other common garage door opener repairs include the replacement of any of the following:

  • drive chains
  • drive belts
  • brackets
  • limit switches
  • trolleys
  • circuit boards
  • motors

Widely known and often used brands of garage door openers include Craftsman,  Chamberlain, Lift Master, Genie, and Alister. You can have a professional easily repair openers from any of these manufacturers, as well as many others.

GARAGE DOOR TRACKS, HINGES, & ROLLERS

Other common garage door problems include damaged sections, bent tracks, squeaky hinges, and squealing rollers. You can have repairs like these taken care of by a professional. In the event that your garage door or parts cannot be repaired, you can simply have them replaced.

REPLACEMENT OF YOUR GARAGE DOOR’S BOTTOM SECTION

Damage to garage door sections is often due to mice having chewed through the bottom section that is made of wood, your car striking your garage door, or water damage eroding away the bottom section. If your garage door’s individual sections have only experienced minimal damage, then you can simply have the individual sections replaced. The wood or steel sections from most manufacturers can be replaced by a garage door repair professional.

Garage Door Opener Range

Do you have to drive all the way up to your garage door before the remote control will operate the door?  Wouldn’t it be better if the opener worked further away and the door was open when you pulled up to it?  A typical garage door opener range is at least three to five car lengths.  If your opener is not working at this distance there are a few things you can try to get better performance.

The first thing to check are the batteries in the garage door opener.  Weak batteries will put out a weak signal that will not operate the door until the opener is very closs.  Putting in a fresh set of batteries will solve the problem in most cases and give you back the range you want.

If the batteries were not the problem, try reprogramming the remote control.  On older openers, you can manually switch to a different channel for the opener and the remote. If you have more than one remote control, don’t forget to reprogram all of the remote control units.  With newer remote controls, just follow the manufacturer’s instructions for reprogramming the remote.

If you are still not getting the performance you desire, try repositioning the antenna on the opener.  If it is coiled or bent, see if straightening the antenna improves the reception.  Some manufacturers also offer external antenna kits that mount outside the garage to avoid the interference sometimes caused by steel doors.

If all else fails, talk to your garage door repair service.  There may be a problem with the transmitter or receiver.
