Maintain Your Garage Door to Extend Its Life

Just like any other electric appliances in your home, your garage door and opener will require a bit of regular maintenance to ensure longevity along with proper operation.

On a monthly basis, you should visually inspect your garage door for signs of wear or damage. Fraying cables, loose mounting hardware and signs of wear on the rollers, cables and springs are all things to look out for. You should also make sure that the safety reverse mechanism is working properly to reduce the likelihood of injury or property damage resulting from the door closing on children, pets and objects. Make sure that weatherstripping along the sides and bottom of the door is intact, and that there are no visible signs of rust anywhere on the door or mechanisms.

Listen to the sound of your door opening and closing. Does it seem louder than usual, or is the door shuddering, rumbling or otherwise behaving strangely? If so, it’s wise to contact a licensed garage door repair and installation service provider for a professional diagnosis and correction.

Aside from maintaining the surface of the door itself, inspecting the mechanisms for signs of wear and looking for indicators that your door isn’t operating as well as it could be, there’s very little garage door maintenance or repair that you can safely perform yourself. The springs and cables that open and close your garage door can be very dangerous, easily causing severe injury if they’re handled improperly. Before attempting any sort of repair yourself, call an experienced professional in your area to ensure that your garage door is properly maintained by someone with the expertise necessary to do so without risking severe physical injury or damage to your garage door mechanisms.

Signs You May Need a Garage Door Spring Replacement

Have you noticed that your garage door opener is working harder than it used to?  Does your garage door seem heavy and hard to open by hand?  Your garage door rollers may be binding up, but the more likely cause is weak garage door springs.

There are two types of garage door springs.  Torsion springs are mounted across the top of the door opening and coil and uncoil as the garage door opens and closes.  Extension springs are mounted along the upper garage door rails extend and contract as the door opens and closes.

Garage door springs help keep the garage door balanced by assisting with opening the door.  Garage door springs are coils of heavy duty metal that carry some of the weight of a closed or closing garage door.  Garage doors weigh hundreds of pounds and without these springs they would be very difficult to open and hard to control while closing.

As a garage door spring gets older, it starts losing its strength which causes the opener to work harder and the door to seem heavier.  If your garage door springs are more than 7 to 10 years old, it may be time to replace them.  Each garage door spring will only work for a certain number of “cycles” of opening and closing.  For a garage door that opens and closes twice a day, the springs should last at least 7 years before showing significant sings of agin.

If you have newer springs, your garage door technician may be able to adjust the spring tension so that the door opens and closes properly.  Older, weak springs are due for a replacement.

Your local garage door service company can help you with a spring adjustment and determine if that will solve the problem  Otherwise they can safely install fresh new springs that will last for years.

Professional Garage Door Repairs

The garage door is the largest moving surface in your home and in most cases, when properly installed and maintained your garage door will provide years of trouble-free service.  However, when your garage door malfunctions it will likely be more than just an inconvenience.  A malfunctioning garage door may no longer be able to provide protection and security for your home and family.

In addition, depending on the nature of the malfunction, a broken garage door can pose a serious safety hazard.  Every year, thousands of Americans are injured in garage door related accidents and according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, a significant number of these injuries are due to garage doors in need of repair.

If your garage door is malfunctioning, it’s important to call a garage door expert as soon as possible. Don’t make the costly and potentially dangerous mistake of trying to repair your garage door yourself.   Other than replacing light bulbs and batteries and lubricating your system, garage door repair and service should be left to an experienced garage door professional

Garage doors are complicated mechanical devices that can weigh 400 pounds and more.  They are connected to extension springs or torsion springs under a lot of pressure.  If one of these springs lets loose or the door comes crashing down, you could be seriously injured.  In addition, if any of the safety features on the door are not working properly, the door can close with enough pressure to crush a child.

A professional garage door service technician has the experience and training to safely repair your garage door and to ensure that all of its safety features are working properly.
