Garage Door Safety Tips for Your Family

As the weather becomes warmer, it is common to see garage doors left open as family’s pull out lawn care products and outdoor items from storage. This is a good time to go over a few reminders on garage door safety. It is easy to get complacent about your garage door – you use it every day without a problem. But garage doors are usually the heaviest moving part in your home and should be treated with respect. Here are a few safety reminders to keep your family safe around your garage door this spring and summer.

  • Check your sensors. One of the most important safety features on your garage door opener are the sensors. Your garage door should stop closing if anything is under it.
  • Teach kids garage door etiquette. Kids love to push buttons that make things move. However, garage doors are not a toy. Teach kids to let adults run the garage door opener.
  • Disable the manual lock. Many times the manual lock can accidentally get engaged while kids are playing in or around the garage. Disable the lock to ensure it does not get locked and harm your garage door when you try to open it with the opener.
  • Tune-up time. Now is a good time to have your garage door serviced with a tune-up. You don’t want a spring breaking when the family is going in and out of the garage all summer.

Don’t take your garage doors for granted. It only takes one mishap to cause serious injury or expensive property damage. Call your local garage door service company to schedule a thorough service and inspection to make sure the sensors, springs and other parts are all in good working order.

How Safe Is Your Garage Door?

This is certainly the time of year when everyone seems to be running in and out of the house, usually through the garage door. Not only has it become the standard mode of entry into your home after parking the car, but with the “busyness” of summer activities it seems to be the main area of high traffic; the ins and outs of getting the yard tools and supplies, bird feeders, pet supplies, tools for various household projects, barbeque grills, bicycles and other recreational items. Your garage door in the summer might as well be a revolving door, for you, your kids, the neighbors’ kids, and pets. So much more important, then, becomes the safety of your door.

Since January 1, 1993, to prevent doors from crushing objects in their path, all garage doors with an automatic garage door opener have been required by federal law to have optic sensors that can detect a person or object below the door, prompting it to reverse. This can be tested by placing an object directly in line with the door, which should reverse immediately upon contact or  by using an object to break the electronic eye beams on either side of the door. Your garage door should also be balanced; meaning, you should be able to lift your garage door smoothly and easily with one hand. If the door is out of balance, it could be using excessive force to close, which could pose a safety hazard.

If your optic sensors are not working correctly, the automatic reverse feature or door balance seems even slightly off, it is a good idea to have your garage door inspected by your local overhead door technician. Checking these few items will ensure the safety of your garage door.

Steel Garage Door Maintenance

Modern steel garage doors are designed to require very little maintenance, but there are a few things you should do to keep your garage door and garage door opener working smoothly.  First, steel garage doors have a long lasting baked on finish, but an occasional cleaning with a soft sponge or rag and a little mild soap will help keeping it looking like new.  Once you are done, rinse it with a hose and let it dry.

Next, check to make sure all of the safety features are working properly. With the door in the open position, activate the garage door opener and check to see that the door reverses and moves to the fully open position when the photoelectric light beam is broken.

Now, with the door in the open position, place a block of wood such as a 2 X 4 flat on the garage floor in the path of the door and activate the door opener.  When the door reaches the wood block, it should reverse and go to the fully open position.  If there is a problem with either of these safety mechanisms, you should have the door serviced by a trained technician.

Be sure to keep the area clear of children and pets and be very cautious when working around a moving garage door.  Be very careful not to get your fingers pinched in the hinges, rollers, or tracks.

Finally, with door closed, lubricate the hinges, rollers, and springs with a non-silicone based spray lubricant.  Remember, the springs are under very high tension so any garage door repairs or adjustments related to the springs, cables, or pulleys, should only be performed by a trained garage door technician.
