Benefits of Using a Smartphone Application for Your Garage Door Opener

Many new garage door openers can be operated through smartphone applications, making them easy and convenient to use. But is it really necessary to opt for this service when a traditional garage door opener can provide you easy access to your garage? You may be surprised that there are more reasons to consider using these applications than just convenience. Smartphone or tablet applications to monitor and use your garage door opener can enhance the safety of your home and give you access to your home whenever you need it.

Safety and Security

One of the main benefits of using a smartphone application instead of a traditional garage door opener is safety and security. Consider the danger of having your garage door opener stolen. If someone breaks into your vehicle and steals your garage door opener, they now have access to your home. What is worse is that there is most likely a vehicle registration or other paperwork in your vehicle with your address on it. Now thieves have an easy way to get into your home and know where you live. By the time you realize what has happened, you may already have been robbed.

Smartphone applications offer higher security by keeping access to your garage inside your phone, which most people keep with them at all time. Plus, even if your phone is stolen, it should have security features to keep it locked. You can use a passcode with your garage door application so that no one but you can access your system, increasing the security.

Another benefit of having a smartphone application for your garage door is to allow access when you are away from home. You can open the door to let trusted people into your home, right from your phone or tablet.

Garage Door Opener Accessories

Garage door openers are a convenience that most homeowners could not dream about living without.  Gone are the days of getting out of the car to open and then close the garage door when you arrived home after a long day at work.  While convenient, in the past garage door openers had two drawbacks, with the first being the size of the remote opener, while the second was a lack a means to open the garage door without the remote.

This was problematic, as most families use the garage as the day-to-day front door to the home, including those that are not driving such as school age children.  In addition, active families, who enjoy walking, cycling and taking the dog for a walk, had no means to open or close the garage door unless they carried the remote that was designed for car use.  Without a garage door remote, there was no access to the garage!

Now the major manufacturers have introduced both a miniature remote garage door opener that is small and light enough to carry in a pocket comfortably.  In addition, they can easily fit into a small purse, as well as on a motorcycle or bicycle.  These are very popular for active homeowners who may not be in their car when they need to access their garage.

Keyless remote garage door openers mounted to the side of the garage door are also very popular, especially for homeowner’s with children that need to access the home thru the garage when returning home form school.  All that is needed is to enter the code to open or close the garage door!

Getting Your Garage Door Opener Repaired

It’s a major inconvenience to have a malfunctioning garage door opener.  Furthermore, it can affect your home’s safety.

It’s important that you ensure your garage door opener works properly. This means that your opener promptly opens and closes your garage door. A malfunctioning garage door opener can result in accidents – such as your garage door closing on a pet or person.

In addition, your garage door needs to close securely. This keeps your home safe – free of burglars and intruders who could take advantage of your poorly secured garage door to gain access to your home.

The cost of repairing your garage door opener depends on:

  •  Type
  • Maintenance
  • Remote
  • Door

Type of Garage Door Openers

There are various kinds of garage doors and openers.

Installing the correct garage door opener is important. Some openers are specially made to facilitate the lifting of heavier garage doors than others. The right garage door opener is one way to minimize repair costs – from the beginning.

Garage Door Maintenance

You can also minimize garage door opener repair costs by regularly checking to see if the whole apparatus is functioning properly. Your garage door tracks should be greased and operational. Additionally, the garage door itself should be in good condition.

Garage Door Opener Remote

Many garage door repair professionals will likely check your remote first. Sometimes, you don’t need your opener repaired. A new battery might be all that you need. Alternatively, you might simply need a new remote.

Door

Your garage door might be experiencing a simple issue that keeps it from properly opening and closing. Misaligned tracks or obstructions might be the culprit.

For a quick inspection of your garage door and opener, call a garage door professional. Professionals can often easily identify and repair the problem(s).

Don’t Underestimate the Importance of Garage Door Safety

Because your garage door has one major function, to open and close on demand, it doesn’t always register with homeowners and parents just how important it is to understand proper garage door safety measures. Your garage door is likely the largest and the heaviest moving object in your home; keeping your family safe depends upon everyone understanding how a garage door should and should not be used.

Kids love pushing buttons, but they need to know that the garage door is not a toy. Push button controls for your garage door that are mounted on the wall need to be installed at least five feet off of the floor so as to be out of the reach of small children, and adults should make sure that all remote controls are kept out of kids’ reach.

When the garage door is moving, fingers and hands should be kept clear of door sections to avoid serious injury. Playing under or near the garage door, or trying to “outrun” it as it drops, are risky activities that can have serious consequences. Similarly, adults should keep in mind that exiting the garage by attempting to race the door as it goes down is just as dangerous, and also sets a bad example for children.

Attempting to complete your own garage door repairs is also not advised in most cases, the electric operating mechanism does present a risk of electrocution if mishandled. Springs and cables, which are under an immense amount of pressure, can cause very severe injuries or even death if they’re handled improperly. In the case of any garage door repairs, it’s always best to contact a local garage door repair specialist or technician to ensure your own safety.

Garage Door Opener Repair & Troubleshooting Part 1

A common garage door opener repair and troubleshooting issue is short range transmitter reception or intermittent operation from your garage door openers remote control.  One of the first things you would do is to see if all your garage door opener remotes behave the same way. If they don’t try changing the battery in your transmitter as they become weak with routine use and require periodic replacement, the type of battery will depend upon the make and model of your automatic garage door opener. If you only have 1 remote and changing the battery doesn’t help you could have a problem with your receiver board inside your garage door opener control box on the ceiling. It’s also very possible that you have a damaged or intermittent garage door transmitter.

You can contact your favorite garage door opener repair company to purchase a replacement garage door opener remote.

Since your garage door openers remote control or transmitter works off of radio frequency there are many things that can interfere with the signal and diminish the distance or range that your garage door opener will work from. Some of the causes can be another garage door opener unit in the same garage, cordless telephones, WiFi, Invisible Pet Fences etc. Furthermore the source of your garage door opener repair could be interference from your neighbor’s home, cell phone towers, a nearby airport, microwave transmitting station or a radar station.

Sometimes the garage door opener that you think needs repair isn’t the problem and it’s actually your other garage door opener needing repair. If you have more than 1 garage door opener in the same garage try unplugging the other garage door opener from the electrical outlet and see if that solves the problem. If it does the radio receiver circuit board in that machine may need to be replaced.

Straining Garage Door Opener

If your notice that your garage door opener seems to be straining to open the door, you need to investigate a little further to find the source of the problem. It could be the opener wearing out or a problem with the door, but whatever it is you should have it fixed.  Otherwise, at a minimum your opener could wear out prematurely but more importantly, you may have a broken spring and the door could potentially come crashing down on someone or on your car.

The first think to check is whether the door operates properly when opened manually.  With the door in the down position, disconnect the door from the opener by pulling on the red handle.  Don’t do it with the door open – if the springs are broken the door could come crashing down.

Garage doors are much heavier than most people realize – typically 200 to 400 pounds.  That’s why they use springs to help lift the load so the door can be opened manually and to take the strain off of your opener.  If the springs are properly adjusted, the door should open easily by hand and should stay in any position.

If the door seems very heavy, you probably have a broken spring and you need to call a professional garage door technician with experience in garage door repairs.  Never try to remove or adjust the springs or disconnect the cable that attaches the spring to the door.  The springs are under a lot of pressure and can cause serious injury or death.

If the door doesn’t seem too heavy, but sticks or is difficult to open and close, the tracks should be adjusted and the rollers lubricated until the door opens easily.  You may be able to make some simple adjustments yourself or call in the pros.

Finally, if the door operates easily by hand, it’s probably time for a new opener.  If in doubt, have the door check out by a good garage door technician.

Troubleshooting Your Garage Door

Many garage door problems have a simple fix.  If your garage door is giving you fits, try a few simple garage door troubleshooting tips before calling the repairman.  If these don’t do the trick, then it’s time to let a professional garage door service handle the repair.

Be very careful when working around a garage door.  Although a properly adjusted garage door is easy to open by hand, many garage doors weigh several hundred pounds and can easily cause serious injuries.  Also, never try to remove or adjust the garage door springs.  These springs are under very high tension and can cause severe injuries or death.

One of the first things to check if your garage door is acting up is the safety sensors.  These are usually mounted near the bottom edges of the door frame and are designed to stop the door from closing if there is anything in the doorway.  If these are obstructed or knocked out of alignment, the door will not close.

If your car remote is not working, but the inside remote button works fine, try changing the batteries in the car remote.  You may need to reprogram the remote after installing new batteries.

If the automatic opener seems to run but the door is not moving, you may need to re-engage the safety release.  This is usually a pull handle hanging on a short length of rope and if it has been activated, the door will be disconnected from the automatic opener.  You can usually reconnect the door by activating the automatic opener to the open position, then manually opening the door until the carriage engages.  Be careful when opening the door manually.  If the door seems heavy, it may be out of adjustment or have a broken spring and you should have a garage door service take a look at it.

Remote Control Troubleshooting

You pull into the driveway after a long day at work.  It is cold and rainy outside, and you are ready to be home!  You push on the garage door remote opener and nothing happens.  So, you try again a bit harder this time.  One last effort is required before giving up, so you roll down the window and place the remote outside the window, and still nothing.  At this point, you admit defeat, walk to the front door, unlock the door, go in, walk to the garage, press the button, and drive your car in.

If this sounds all too familiar to you, you obviously have something wrong with your garage door remote opener!  The most common reason for remote opener failure is a dead or dying battery.  Replace all the batteries in the remote and try again.

The second most reason for remote opener failure is a disconnection of the garage door opener itself.  If the power went out during the day, you may have to reset your garage door opener.  This usually can be done by manually disengaging the garage door from the opener, and then reengaging it.

If your remote opener works intermittently, you may have a radio frequency problem.  Although unusual, this may occur.

Finally, it’s possible that the remote opener is broken.  Try using a different remote opener.  If all the other remote openers work, then the non-working remote opener should be replaced.

If you have attempted to fix your opener with the above tips, and are still having problems with your garage door opener, call your local professional garage door contractor for evaluation.  They will come and inspect the situation and determine the cause of the problem.
